The on-site studio made it both a home and a creative workspace, ideal for the fiercely private couple, though the build wasn’t without friction: Lange and Twain later settled with the Adirondack Park Agency over unpermitted construction and wetland damage on the property.
But Shania’s memories of the place aren’t entirely positive. She suffered a stalking incident here that resulted in a man going to jail. She eventually sold the home in the late 2000s for roughly half its $9 million asking price — eager, it seemed, to leave those memories behind.
Their son, Eja (pronounced “Asia”), was born in August 2001 and grew up splitting time between properties like this one. Of all the properties Shania has owned, none captures the scale of her ambitions quite like Mahu Whenua. Spread across 136,000 acres of New Zealand’s South Island, near Wanaka and roughly 70 kilometres from Queenstown, the name translates from Māori as “healing the land” — and that’s exactly what it was meant to do.
Shania was battling the effects of Lyme disease at the time, suffering nerve damage to her vocal cords. She and Lange purchased the property in 2004 for $21.5 million and began building what would become an extraordinary rural retreat. In her 2011 memoir, From This Moment On, she wrote that she put her “heart, soul and dreams” into the property, imagining herself “riding horses across the vast plains, along winding riverbanks and through golden tussocks.”
Construction of the stone-and-timber homestead was completed in 2008, and the property became the most personal project she’d ever undertaken. The main suite — now called the Tui Suite — features a copper bathtub with mountain views, a cylindrical double shower, and finishes that blend rustic materials with careful craftsmanship.
Today, Mahu Whenua operates as one of New Zealand’s most exclusive luxury lodges, with five suites accommodating up to 12 guests. The Bahamian Dream: A Beach House Made for Escaping the World
When Shania wants to disappear, she heads to the Bahamas. Her beachfront mansion sits in the exclusive Old Fort Bay gated community in West Nassau — a private enclave where the only sounds are waves and the occasional tropical bird.
The property covers a full acre with 150 feet of direct beachfront. Built in 2004, the 7,000-square-foot home has five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and panoramic ocean views visible from every room. After the heartbreak of her divorce, Shania found love again with Frédéric Thiébaud, a Swiss businessman and the ex-husband of Marie-Anne Thiebaud, her former close friend and personal assistant, with whom Mutt Lange had been having an affair. The two bonded over their shared pain, married on a Puerto Rican beach at sunset on New Year’s Day 2011, and settled into a new life together in Switzerland.
Today, Shania and Frédéric spend most of their time at their home in Corseaux, overlooking Lake Geneva. Purchased in 2007 for $15 million, the property is now registered solely in her name. It’s where she writes, produces, and lives a life that’s markedly different from the isolated intensity of the Lange years.
The home reflects that shift. A piano sits at the centre of the living room, alongside her acoustic guitar and a portrait of Claude Nobs, the founder of Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival. “It’s a very beautiful region,” she told Outsider. “I like to spend a lot of time boating on the lake.” It’s a long way from Timmins, Ontario — but it feels earned.
Las Vegas: Horses, Residencies, and Reinvention
In 2019, the same year she launched a two-year residency at Zappos Theater in Planet Hollywood, Shania bought a farm on the outskirts of Las Vegas. While most artists performing extended Vegas runs stay in the hotels where they’re appearing, Shania preferred to come home to her horses.
“I always have to have my horses with me, and my dogs,” she said on LIVE with Kelly and Ryan. The farm gave her exactly that — space to ride, room for her animals, and a private retreat away from the Strip.
